New Zealand

New Zealand wine is an experience like no other. Their special combination of soil, climate and water, their innovative pioneering spirit and their commitment to quality all come together to deliver pure, intense and diverse experiences. In every glass of New Zealand Wine is a world of pure discovery.

New Zealand's temperate, maritime climate has a strong influence on the country's predominantly coastal vineyards. The vines are warmed by strong, clear sunlight during the day and cooled at night by sea breezes. The long, slow ripening period helps to retain the vibrant varietal flavours that make New Zealand wine so distinctive.

New Zealand's small population, distant location and agricultural economy have earned the country a 'clean, green' image. Visitors often describe it as 'an unspoiled paradise'. New Zealand's winemakers and grape growers are determined to keep it this way. Innovative practices in the vineyard and winery which deliver quality in a sustainable and environmental manner, ensure that New Zealand meets a growing world demand for wines that have been produced in a 'clean and green' fashion.

Alsace - France

Contrary to other French wine regions, the wines of Alsace are not named after the villages or vineyards from which they come, but after the grape variety. Alsace wines are made from seven varieties : Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Muscat d'Alsace, Tokay Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.

All must by law be bottled in the region of production, in the traditional slender Alsace Bottle.

Germany

Germany (which has a history of winemaking dating back to 100 B.C) is enjoying something of a revived interest throughout the world. In Britain this means that German Wine is not always synonymous in the mind with ‘Liebfraumilch’, a basic white wine. Interestingly, Liebfraumilch is not drunk in Germany, and is intended solely for export.

The high quality of wine produced on the oldest estates, together with Good German Wine for most people means one thing: Riesling. Riesling is by far the most commonly produced German Wine. It is dry with a sometimes sharp taste and a smoky aftertaste. This is grown throughout Germany. Muller-Thugau is another commonly used grape, with a less prominent taste than Riesling, also grown widely throughout Germany. Gerwutztraminer is a spicy white grown in smaller quantities than the former, and again grown throughout Germany. These along with other grapes are hardy and can thrive in the cool Central European climate. Due to the relative stability of the German climate wines do not vary by area as much as in neighbouring France, where local terroir is everything.

Tuscany - Italy

Chianti may well be synonymous with Tuscany, but there is far more diversity here than a visit to your average wine merchant would suggest. Recent years have witnessed considerable changes, with most articles on Tuscan wine commenting upon the shift of emphasis from quantity to quality.

Above all, Tuscany produces red wine and, above all, this wine is made from the Sangiovese grape. The practice of adding white grapes to the Chianti blend has, thankfully, all but disappeared; the last twenty or so years has seen Sangiovese find a new partner - Cabernet Sauvignon - and when this marriage works, as it often does, the resultant wines are usually excellent and, occasionally, truly great.

The white wines of Tuscany are far less important than the reds. Produced predominantly from the workaday Trebbiano grape, a notable exception is Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Good Sauvignon and Chardonnay is made, but the prices tend to be quite high. Vin Santo, the famous after-dinner wine, is also seeing a renewed commitment to quality.

Callaway Winery - United States

Callaway Vineyard & Winery was founded in 1969 by Ely Callaway, who went on to gain fame and fortune in the world of golf. Extensive research led Mr. Callaway to Temecula and to veteran viticulturist John Moramarco who believed that the area was ideal for growing premium wine grapes. In the rolling hills, he found what he believed to be the perfect spot to plant his vines; a 1600 foot plateau, located below the peaks of a foggy mountain range "where the sun shines through the mist".

After Moramarco convinced Ely of the merits of the region, Callaway purchased 150 acres for what was to become the beginning of grape production in the Temecula Valley in 1968. Moramarco was hired to run the vineyard operation of 105 acres of grapes including Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and White Riesling. Thus, the legacy began.

After almost 40 years of history, Callaway Vineyard & Winery has had some remarkable events and achievements take place ...
